Mayo County Council has released draft casual trading bye-laws for Castlebar, opening them for public consultation until 7 July 2025. The draft aims to modernise and clarify trading rules in the town to ensure well-managed, vibrant markets that work for traders and the public alike.
These draft bye-laws set out proposed rules on licensing, permitted trading areas, operating hours, and compliance standards. The council invites traders, businesses, and residents to review the proposals and provide input during this consultation phase.

These proposed rules aim to modernise and regulate casual trading across several new locations, including:
- Lough Lannagh
- Hopkins’ Road Car Park
- Market Square Plaza
- Castle Lane
The draft includes permissions for both market pitches and food/drink vehicles, sets fees, confirms key trading hours, and requires public liability insurance and compliance with market standards . The bye-laws also revoke the outdated 2020 regulations once they are adopted.
Key trading zones: Lough Lannagh, Market Square Plaza, Hopkins’ Road, Castle Lane
What It Means for IOMST Members
This consultation is an opportunity for traders and local businesses to have their say on where, when, and how casual trading operates in Castlebar. For example, a coffee stand at Lough Lannagh could become permanent, a shift supported by Councillor Ger Deere, who says it would serve walkers, families, and cyclists
