Street Performer Byelaws in Cork City

Cork City Council has introduced new Street Performer Byelaws, which came into effect on 20 May 2024.

These rules are designed to keep performances safe, enjoyable, and fair for everyone, performers, businesses, and the public.

You’ll need a permit to perform and there are clear rules around where, when, and how you can busk.

Key Points for Performers

  • Permit required – All performers must hold a valid Street Performer Permit.
  • Where you can perform – Only in designated busking zones, marked on the street. You must stay within 3 metres of the marker and not block footpaths, doorways, or entrances.
  • Time limits – Each performance is limited to 2 hours. You must then move at least 50 metres away before starting again.
  • Distance from others – Keep at least 50 metres away from another performer.
  • Proximity to buildings – You cannot perform within 3 metres of a residence or business entrance (businesses during opening hours, residences at all times).
  • Donations – You cannot charge a fee, but you may accept donations via a tip box, contactless device, QR code, or visible payment link.
  • Behaviour – Acts must be safe, respectful, and suitable for all audiences. No offensive, racist, or lewd language is permitted. Performing under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not allowed.
  • Enforcement – Gardaí can ask you to move on or issue fines if you do not follow the byelaws.

Why It Matters

The rules are intended to balance creativity with safety and access in busy city areas.

For performers planning to work in Cork, it’s important to apply for your permit in advance and familiarise yourself with the full byelaws before setting up.
