Getting Your Stall Ready for the Spring Market Season

As we move into March, many traders across Ireland are starting to prepare for the return of the busy market season.

Spring markets, food festivals, and outdoor events begin to appear again, and for many traders this is the first real opportunity of the year to get back out in front of customers.

After the quieter winter months, it is well worth taking a little time to make sure everything is ready before your first market of the season. A few simple checks now can make the day run much more smoothly when you are setting up early in the morning.

Check Your Equipment

If your gazebo, tables, or display equipment have been stored away since Christmas, take them out and give everything a proper look over. Check that your gazebo frame opens and closes smoothly and that the fabric has no tears or damage. It is also a good idea to make sure you still have all of your weights and fixings.

Outdoor markets in Ireland can bring wind and rain at any time of year, so secure weights are essential for safety. Take a few minutes to test everything now to save stress on the morning of a market.

Review Your Stall Display

Spring is a great time to refresh how your stall looks. Customers are often browsing after the winter months and a tidy, welcoming display makes a big difference.

Consider whether your stall could benefit from:

  • Clearer signage or price labels

  • A small refresh of your table layout

  • Adding height to displays so products are easier to see

  • Seasonal touches that reflect spring or upcoming occasions

Even small changes can help attract attention and make your stall easier for customers to browse.

Check Your Stock

If you have not traded since before Christmas, now is the time to review what you have in stock. Some items may need replacing or refreshing, and certain products might sell better at this time of year.

Spring markets often bring a mix of regular customers and new visitors, so it can be a good opportunity to introduce new products or seasonal items alongside your best sellers.

Make Sure Your Payments Are Ready

More customers are paying by card or phone than ever before, so it is important to make sure your payment systems are ready for the season.

Before your first market:

  • Charge your card reader

  • Check that your app is updated

  • Test a small transaction if possible

  • Bring a backup charger or power bank

It is also worth bringing a float for cash payments, as many customers still like to pay in cash at markets.

Confirm Your Insurance and Paperwork

Before trading again, make sure your public liability insurance and any paperwork required by organisers are up to date. Most markets will require proof of insurance before confirming your place.

If you are selling food, double-check your food safety registration and documentation. Being fully prepared with all paperwork will make applications and check-ins with organisers much smoother.

Plan Your Market Calendar

March is also the time when many summer markets and festivals open applications. Keeping an eye on upcoming opportunities and planning your calendar early can help you secure the events that suit your business best.

Some traders find it useful to keep a simple list of events they have applied to, along with application deadlines and confirmation dates.

The start of the market season is always an exciting time. With a little preparation now, you can head into your first market feeling organised, confident, and ready for a busy spring ahead.
