Castlebar’s New Draft By-Laws: Lough Lannagh Lakeside Trading Under Review

Mayo County Council has published new draft casual trading by-laws that propose to open Lough Lannagh in Castlebar to mobile coffee units and small-vehicle trading.

This marks a notable development in the local casual trading landscape, with the aim of supporting small businesses and enhancing visitor experience at this popular lakeside spot. If approved, these changes could pave the way for more seasonal or semi-permanent vendors in scenic outdoor areas.

What’s Being Proposed?

The draft by-laws would designate specific areas at Lough Lannagh where casual trading could take place. This includes allowing:

  • Coffee trailers
  • Small trading vehicles (such as snack or artisan food stalls)
  • Trading during defined times and dates, likely aligned with footfall and recreational use of the park

The by-laws also outline licensing conditions, layout expectations, and operational standards to maintain cleanliness, safety, and public enjoyment of the space.

Traders – What You Should Know

Submissions are open from 22 May to 7 July 2025

  • This is your opportunity to support, object to, or suggest changes to the proposal
  • No trading can take place until the by-laws are finalised and licences are granted
  • If passed, traders will likely need to apply through the council’s official channels and comply with the conditions set out in the final by-laws

Why It Matters

Lough Lannagh is a busy leisure spot in Castlebar. Allowing mobile coffee and light food vendors could create more trading opportunities for local entrepreneurs, while also improving amenities for park users. However, this may also raise questions around parking, litter, competition, or access—hence the importance of the public consultation phase.
