In April 2025, several traders selling clothing in Ballyhaunis town centre were approached and cautioned by Gardaí. This caused confusion among traders as Ballyhaunis currently has no casual trading bye-laws, no designated trading zones, and no official licensing system in place.
Following these events, Mayo County Council confirmed that there are no active casual trading regulations or enforcement patrols in Ballyhaunis at this time.
This means that although Gardaí issued cautions to traders, Ballyhaunis currently has no formal enforcement structure or bye-laws regulating casual trading. Traders are not officially required to stop trading, but without clear local rules in place, their ability to trade may depend on the discretion of Gardaí on the ground.
While trading without fees or strict regulations might seem appealing, it can also lead to practical problems. Without clear guidelines, traders may face issues like receiving responsibility notices without due process, or overcrowding from multiple traders turning up to the same spot, causing disputes or confusion.

For traders, this situation underlines the need to:
- Stay informed about the status of local bye-laws before trading in new locations
- Seek written confirmation from councils if it’s unclear whether trading is permitted
- Keep records of any communications or warnings received from Gardaí or council staff
While Ballyhaunis currently operates without formal casual trading regulations, this incident highlights the need for clearer communication and coordination between councils, enforcement bodies, and the trading community to ensure traders know their rights and responsibilities.
