Dublin City Council Launches Online Casual Trading Licence System

Dublin City Council has introduced a major change that could make life easier for many traders,  all Casual and Event Trading licence applications can now be submitted entirely online.

That’s right — no more printing, posting, or chasing paperwork.

In 2024 alone, over 2,600 event trading licences and 617 street performer permits were issued by Dublin City Council. With this surge in demand and more traders getting back to business, the new online system is designed to make the whole process quicker and more efficient.

What This Means for Traders

For many members, especially those used to paper forms or visiting council offices, this is a significant shift — but one that could save time and hassle.

The Good News:

  • It’s faster. You can now apply, pay, and upload documents from your phone, tablet or computer.
  • No more delays. Avoid postal deadlines and last-minute runs to city offices.
  • Everything is centralised. Once you create your account, you’ll have your applications in one place.

Things to Keep in Mind:

  • You’ll need access to a device and the internet to apply.
  • Make sure your documents (like insurance and ID) are scanned or saved as clear files.
  • Some traders may need support with digital tools, reach out if you’d like help, or ask someone you trust to walk you through it the first time.

What Does This Mean for Market Traders?

A Step Forward for Traders , or More Red Tape?

Overall, it’s a positive step towards modernising casual trading in the city, especially with more events, markets and street performances coming back stronger post-Covid. For experienced traders, this should make applying more straightforward. For newer traders, it may take a little adjustment, but it’s likely to become second nature before long. And while moving online won’t solve every issue in the sector, it does cut down on admin time, letting traders focus more on their business and less on red tape.

What You Can Do Now

  • Get familiar with the online portal: Click here to start.
  • Gather your documents: Insurance certs, identification, and any other required files should be ready to upload.
  • Apply early: High-demand dates (especially around festivals, holidays or seasonal events) can book out fast, the earlier you apply, the better your chances.
