Four New Casual Trading Zones Proposed for Castlebar

Castlebar Municipal District has announced plans to formally designate four new casual trading zones within the town. This follows their recent proposal concerning Lough Lannagh and shows a clear effort to revitalise local trading opportunities.

According to Mayo County Council, the following locations are being considered for licensing under the updated casual trading framework:

Proposed Casual Trading Locations

  • Hopkins Road Car Park
  • Market Square Plaza
  • Castle Lane
  • Lough Lannagh Car Park

These zones would be subject to defined licence fees, pitch sizes, and operating conditions—outlined in the council’s draft plan. If approved, traders will be able to apply for permission to operate in these key town centre and lakeside areas.

What This Means for Traders

This move could open up valuable new locations for both new and established stallholders, particularly those operating:

  • Food or coffee units
  • Craft or handmade goods
  • Seasonal produce or flowers

However, traders should keep in mind:

  • Licences must be applied for through Mayo County Council once finalised
  • Public consultation and submissions are part of the decision-making process
  • Each site will likely have specific layout and timing restrictions

Public Submissions Open

Traders and members of the public are invited to give feedback on the proposals. Submissions are open until 7 July 2025 and can be made through the Mayo County Council website.
