Revamp of Dublin Fruit & Vegetable Market (Mary’s Lane): What Traders Should Know

The historic Dublin Fruit and Vegetable Market on Mary’s Lane is undergoing a significant transformation. After years of planning and delays, construction began in June 2025 on a €44 million redevelopment project aimed at revitalizing this iconic Victorian-era building.

What’s Happening?

The redevelopment includes:

  • Restoration of the original 1892 structure, preserving its architectural heritage.
  • Addition of new buildings on the south side facing Chancery Street.
  • Installation of at least 80 stalls, alongside a restaurant and food demonstration space.
  • Creation of an outdoor farmers’ market under canopies in the Chancery Street Yard.
  • Facilities for community growers and start-up food businesses, providing a platform for local producers.

The project is expected to be completed by mid-2027, with the market operating seven days a week to support the city’s north retail core and highlight the food offerings to locals and visitors alike.

What This Means for Traders

The redevelopment of the Mary’s Lane market presents both opportunities and considerations for traders:

  • Opportunities: The new market will offer a modern, vibrant space for food traders, with facilities designed to support a diverse range of vendors. The inclusion of community growers and start-up food businesses indicates a focus on local and sustainable produce.

  • Considerations: While the redevelopment promises a state-of-the-art facility, the transition period may require traders to seek alternative venues temporarily. It’s important for traders to stay informed about the project’s progress and plan accordingly.
