Saving Strandhill People’s Market – A Story of Resilience, Community & the Power of Markets
Strandhill People’s Market has been a shining light on Ireland’s market scene for over a decade — a space where local traders, artists, food producers, and families gather to connect, create and share. But now, this treasured community hub is under threat, and many are rallying to help save it.
This isn’t just about a market — it’s about preserving a local institution that’s helped countless small businesses grow from their very first table to thriving enterprises.
A Challenging Start, But a Passionate Vision

When the team behind Strandhill People’s Market first approached IOMST back in 2013, they had an idea full of heart — but like many new organisers, they also had a mountain of challenges to overcome. Starting a market is no easy feat. From meeting venue requirements, to navigating regulations and paperwork, there’s a lot more to it than simply setting up stalls.
The early days brought plenty of hurdles, but the team were committed to doing things right. From documentation and licensing to risk assessments and trader requirements, they worked hard to ensure the market met every requirement — and the effort paid off.
With everything in place, they got started — and what followed was something truly special.
A Market That Became a Movement
Strandhill Market quickly became more than just a shopping destination. It grew into a community space, a launchpad for local business, and a weekly tradition for families and locals. The beautiful hangar at Sligo Airport provided a unique indoor setting where people could gather, rain or shine, and support homegrown talent.
Over the years, we’ve been proud to support both the organisers and the many IOMST members who trade at the market. It’s a place where ideas flourish, connections are made, and the spirit of community lives strong.
💔 The Current Situation
Sadly, Strandhill People’s Market has recently been forced to close its doors at the airport venue — a decision that’s left traders, customers, and supporters heartbroken.
A petition has been launched by those who want to see the market return and continue its positive impact on the region.

Markets like Strandhill are vital. They give small businesses a platform, help local economies thrive, and bring people together in ways that online spaces can’t.
IOMST exists to support markets and traders — whether that’s through insurance, advice, or simply cheering them on from the sidelines. Strandhill is a perfect example of how a well-organised market, built with the right support and guidance, can become a beloved local fixture.
